Notes - Elizabeth's father, Samuel, was a Quaker and had helped build Independence Hall in Philadelphia. He did not consent to her marriage to John Ross because John was an Anglican. So, the couple slipped away and were married in New Jersey. Their license was signed by William Franklin, son of Benjamin Franklin, and the colonial governor of New Jersey.
The couple moved into their house in Philadelphia, 239 Arch Street. John was an upholsterer and the couple had a pew in Christ Church near that of George Washington. Betsy was visited by General George Ross, John's uncle and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He asked her to make a flag for the Revolutionary forces.
