| 1 | Sarah was born in Stamford, although there is no record of either her birth or baptism. She grew up as her father was actively involved in the politics of the Town of Stamford. At the same time there was a great deal of commercial activity within the colonies in what is now Connecticut and with New York colonies, across Long Island Sound. Because of this, it is likely Sarah met Jonathan through either her father's travels or excursions by the Scudder family. Huntington, New York is almost directly across the sound from Stamford. Her marriage to Jonathan Scudder on 14 November 1680 is recorded in the Huntington Town Records. Various Platt genealogies suggest that a Jonas Platt md. a Sarah Scudder. People have been trying to make various Sarah Scudders who md. other people into the wife of this Jonas Platt. One younger Sarah Scudder did md. an Epenetus Platt. But these Sarahs are all accounted for and married other husbands. The only likely one left, although this is circumstantial, is Mrs. Sarah (Brown) Scudder,WIDOW of Jonathan, NOT his daughter Sarah. He had died by 1690 allowing time for a marriage of his widow to Jonas Platt and the birth of Jonas's children in the 1690s. It is possible that Jonathan also had a 2nd wife, name unknown, mother of his youngest children. This is yet circumstantial and unproven, but definitely Jonas did not marry the mentally incapacited Sarah (Jonathan and Sarah (Brown's) daughter, when she was 23 years of age and then went on to have a great many children. Sarah Scudder the dau. of Jonahan Scudder and Sarah Brown was b. 1681 and "non compos mentis" according to Donald Jacobus Lines in "History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield," v. 1, p. 106. | Brown, Sarah (I288)

| 2 | Family of Isabel's parents were Kenneth Anderson and Hannah ____? in William Mervine, Proceedings of the New Historical Society, v. 7, no. 2, (1912), 75–84. They had 2 children: ISABEL who married Nathaniel Scudder, and LYDIA who died a week short of 4 years of years of age. https://www.google.com/books/edition/Proceedings_of_the_New_Jersey_Historical/JeXL8dnnFsYC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=%22John+Anderson%22+%2B%22Proceedings+of+the+New+Jersey+Historical+Society%22&pg=PA80&printsec=frontcover Isabel Anderson's grandparents were COL. JOHN and ANNA (REID) ANDERSON in "The Scottish Origin of Colonel John Anderson, Commander of the Unicorn During the Darien Expedition & President of His Majesty's Council for the Province of New Jersey." Includes Col. John's children & his grandchildren including the family of Isabel Anderson & her husband Nathaniel Scudder. This scholarly journal article about Isabel's grandfather is in Donald C. Lockhart, "The Scottish Origin of Colonel John Anderson, Commander of the Unicorn During the Darien Expedition and President of His Majesty's Council for the Province of New Jersey," in The American Genealogist, v. 83, no. 1, (2008): 1–12. Latest scholarship for this family is in Donald C. Lockhart, "The Scottish Origin ofColonel John Anderson, Commander of the Unicorn During the Darien Expedition and President of His Majesty's Council for the Province of New Jersey," in The American Genealogist, v. 83, no. 1, (2008): 1–12, the/image/?volumeId=33906&pageName=1&rId=56270681 Gives the documentary proofs from the Scottish and N. J.archives of Col. John Anderson's place of origin at Fortrose, Ross-shire,Scotland, the son of James Anderson, a merchant of that place. He had an older brother Kenneth. The family later moved to Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland where a different Anderson family lived that has been erroneously mixed with Col.John Anderson, short time governor of New Jersey. This article proves that Col. Anderson was not the son of John Anderson of Dowhill in Glasgow but the families were contemporary in Glasgow and had some association. If they were related by blood, how is not proven by any record source. That other John of Dowhill, father of John of Dowhill b. Dowhill, Glasgow, was not a brother of James of Fortrose, father of Col. Anderson of N. J, as shown by records included in this article. Col. Anderson, after the failed Darien Expedition, settled at East New Jersey. "On 7 Dec 1701, he married Anna Reid, daughter of John Reid, Surveyor-General of New Jersey and noted landscape architect...the couple had 9 children: JOHN (b. ca. 1704); JAMES (b. 7 July 1708); KENNETH (b. 18 May1710); JONATHAN; MARGARET; HELENA; ANNA: ELIZABETH' and ISABEL[L)A." His grave inscription indicates that he was born about 1665. BUT HE WAS NOT THE SAME AS JOHN ANDERSON, 1665, born to JOHN ANDERSON of DOWHILL, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Also shows grandchildren and some succeeding generations. Available at https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/american-genealogist-the/image/?volumeId=33906&pageName=1&rId=56270681. The Col. John Anderson family is covered in William S. | 45 | There is no birth record or any direct evidence that Susanna was the daughter of John [T-1 in old numbers] and Mary (King) Scudder of Newtown. A woman "of great age" named Susanna Scudder died at Newtown in 1739 as recorded on the records oe Presbyterian Church. However, she was never mentioned in connection with any record pertaining to parents John and Mary (King) Scudder or any of their other children. Apparently not knowing where else to assign Susanna, Scudder Searches, v. 1, no. 2, p. 9 states she is "probably" their child "apparently" born Southold. Again there is no direct evidence for this. The death record does not say Susanna was a widow, but it does not say she was not. This same issue says Hannah Scudder, (old number T-1-5), the daughter of John (T-1) and Mary (King) Scudder "married Joshua Bangs [of Massachusetts] in 1669." That would have been the year following her marriage to William Smith, problematiause Hannah (T-1-5) was having children with Wiliam Smith and of record elsewhere at Long Island. It was Hannah Scudder, (J-5) who became the wife of Joshua Bangs. She was a cousin in Massachusetts, daughter of the immigrant John Scudder (J) and his wife Hannah unknown. John (J), was son of John Scudder and his wife Elizabeth Stoughtos John was brother of the immigrant Thomas (T). Hannah (J-5), who married Joshua Bangs, was not of the Long Island, New York Scudders. See sketch of his father Edward Bangs in The Great Migration Begins, v 1, A–F, 89.] Other possibilities for Susanna exist in the family of Samuel Scudder I (old number T-1-1) , son of John I (old number T-1-2), son of Thomas (T) the immigrant, because no convenient record names all of Samuel I's children or his grandchildrenhose identified have been identified through various wills. By the will of Mary Scudder, 1756, we learn that Samuel I had an eldest son of Unknown name Scudder who had children referred to in Mary's will. The name of Unknown name Scudder also had a wife of unknown name who could have been approaching age 80 in 1739. It is unfortunate that in the first generations of the family of Samuel I that there are very few wills. We only know the names of 2 children for John Scudder II (old numbers T-1-2), son of John I, son of Thomas (T) the immigrant. John II remained at Newtown, dying 1 Dec 1732, 7 years before Susanna. For these reasons, Susanna is being detached from the family of John I (T-1) because there is no real direct evidence and indirect evidence is inconclusive. She remains in the database while more research can proceed. Prior note: Susanna never married. [However, no source for the statement was given. The death record on the Newtown Presbyterian Church records did not note marital status.] | Scudder, Susanna (I388)
