Mary Giles or Very[1]
-
Name Mary Giles or Very Birth Abt 1635 Salem, Massachusetts, British Colonial America
- Bridget (Unknown) (Very) Giles left a legacy to Mary Cutler in her will dated 14 January 1668, proved 30 November 1680. Jane Fletcher Fiske in "The Verry Connection," "A New England Immigrant Kinship Connection," states:
"Accounts of the family have assumed that Mary Cutler was the daughter of Thomas and Bridget Verry, but this seems far from certain. Mary is named in Bridget's will without any relationship stated. She is mentioned after the two Verry sons, but her legacy was to be paid by son Eleazer Giles. Bridget's two known daughters by her second husband were not mentioned....Given this chronology, it seems unlikely before 1630 and there is no room for her among the Verry children after that date. a birthdate in the mid-1630s suggests three possibilities. Most likely is that Mary was born in 1635, the result of th offense for which Edward Giles was fined in October of that year—record of Salem baptisms begins in 1636. More retely possible is that she was the daughter of Edward Giles by his first marriage, and thus Bridget's stepdaughter and an infant at the time of her father's remarriage, or that Bridget herself had a brief second marriage between 1632 and 1634 which produced a daughter."
