Notes - Laurent attended school in Chicago, but had private tutors when the family moved to Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1925, and received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from there in 1927. In 1916, he enlisted in the Michigan National Guard and served on the Mexican border. He served overseas during World War I, and in August 1918, was wounded, remaining in a hospital for a year. He was discharged in August 29, 1919, and resumed his law studies.
After being admitted to the bar, Laurent moved to Grand Rapids and became a member of the law firm of Travis, Merrick & Johnson. He became a partner in 1933. He was a Mason, a member of the Episcopal Church, and a Republican. He specialized in insurance law.
