  Armistead was a major in the Medical Corps., 9th Infantry Regiment, Veteran of World War I. On the evening of May 11, 1935, he fired two shots into the head of his sister-in-law May Scudder Long while she was sleeping. She remained in a coma for 6 days, passing on May 17, 1935 at Baylor Hospital in San Antonio. He was arrested and eventually declared insane, having no memory of his actions. At the time of his death, he had been a patient in the Waco Veterans Hospital for 18 years.
