Notes - Charles was a high school principal in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was a graduate of Central Normal College. He received his master's degree from Butler University. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserves for 27 years, retiring in 1968. He served his country during World War II in the invasions of Sicily, Salerno, and was aboard LCT 431 at Dog Red on the third wave at Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He then served aboard the U.S.S. Dionysus in the Pacific Theater and was in Tokyo Bay when the treaty was signed with Japan in 1945. His highest rank was Commander.
Charles was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church and later joined Northside Baptist Church. In addition, he was a member of the Indianapolis Education Association, the State Principals' Association, and a 50 - year member of the Morgan County Masonic Lodge.
