Notes - Celia graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Radcliffe College and later did graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She pursued her interest in the arts by joining the staff of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. While visiting friends in a remote area of the Adirondacks, she met Mason Scudder.
Celia pursued her interests in art, history, architecture and the environment by supporting St. Louis organizations devoted to those causes. She took a special interest in the Missouri Botanical Garden, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Missouri Historical Society and the Nature Conservancy. She also participated in the Colonial Dames. She supported historic preservation in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., following efforts there by Les Amis, the region's Creole Colonial Preservation Society. Most recently, she supported restoration of the Amoureux House, an 18th-century French Colonial house.
After Mason's death in 1971, Celia traveled on her own until she was in her mid-80s. She believed in trying nearly everything at least once, including taking a camel ride when she was in her mid-70s, her nephews said. "She would say, 'If you say no to an invitation or opportunity, you may not get a second chance. There are so many interesting places in the world, and we are so lucky to be able to see them,'" said her nephew, Henry Vandermark of Cambridge, Massachusetts. In the 1980s, Celia moved from St. Louis to Boston to be close to her family. She later retired to Naples.
