    • Townsend, a graduate of Yale University, taught English at Yale and at Swarthmore College. He was a founder in 1950 of the Center for Information on America, a nonpartisan publisher of pamphlets on issues affecting the United States. He ran the organization until his retirement in 1980.

      Townsend wrote several books, including ''Emerson, the Lonely, Wayfaring Man,'' published in 1936 by Oxford University Press, and ''Concord: American Town,'' published in 1947 by Little, Brown & Company.
