Notes - Moses headed a party of Mormon settlers from Brigham City, Arizona, in 1881 to establish the community of Eden, first known as Curtis. This settlement lies on the northern side of the Gila River, nine miles northwest of Pima. Although other immigrants occupied holdings nearby, Moses and William Hawkins were the only residents of the present Eden townsite.
The men first turned their attention toward the construction of a ditch from the river, which they completed in 1882. For a time the small community was on short rations, limited to one meal a day of beans, served at noon to the workers. These early settlers built bowers of brush under which they rolled their covered wagons. There were Indian scares, and life was not comfortable. In the fall of 1882, eight families were living in a little stockade fort that enclosed a half acre of ground, near the river.
