  • Notes
    • One of the most original and influential American poets, Walt grew up and attended public schools in Brooklyn, and spent his summers in central Long Island. He started his working life teaching school and working for several newspapers and magazines in New York, Brooklyn, and New Orleans. During the Civil War, he worked as a volunteer nurse in Army hospitals in Washington, DC. After the war, he was a government employee, but a paralytic attack in 1873 forced him to give up his work in Washington. For just about the remainder of his life, he lived and worked in Camden, New Jersey. Among his works are "Leaves of Grass," "Drum Taps," and "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd."
