Notes - John served in the New Jersey militia during the Revolutionary War. He enlised as a private but later advanced to the rank of colonel. His land holdings in Westfield stretched from Elmer Street to Gallows Hill Road.
John's will identified his wife, Zipporah, to whom he left half of his movable estate. He left his daughter, Phebe Wood Scudder, remainder of moveables, when 20, and his son, Abraham Clark Scudder, the place where he lived purchased of Joseph Mills and Noah Marsh, it being on the southeast side of road from Westfield to Springfield; also 10 acres of woodland on the upper side of road by corner of William Baker's land, also 11 acres on the Hill, purchased of Joshua Marsh, dec'd. He left his son, John, remainder of lands. Zipporah was to have use of lands willed to son, Abraham, while she remained unmarried, and son, Abraham, to be put out to a trade until 21. He left John and Abraham a salt marsh in Rahway adjoining Dr. Isaac Morse. The executors were friends, Jedediah Swan, Esq., Mathias Sayre, William Baker. The witnesses were Daniel Parring, Charles Gilman, Samuel Downer, Jr. The will was proved 10/15/1791. John's inventory was valued at £375.16.10; made by John Briant, and William Darby.
