  William and his family moved to Cumberland County, New Jersey about 1807. He and his wife, Lydia, moved to settle in Cook County, Illinois during the 1840's, and he changed his surname from Cheesman to Chessman, believing it might help his trade as a merchant. He had also worked as a seaman, boot and shoe maker. He died of pneumonia in Lemont, Cook County, Illinois.
