  • Notes 
    • Merle spent his childhood in the Cumberland Co/Salem Co area before enlisting in the US Army circa 1941. It is believed he remained on active duty following the end of his WWII service. Sergeant First Class Merle W Young was killed in action during the second battle of the Nakdong River Bulge in South Korea, following the 2nd Infantry Division's entry into the conflict on 31 August 1950.

      Sergeant First Class Young was a member of the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on September 7, 1950 and died of those wounds later that day. Sergeant First Class Young was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
