Notes - After studying at Yale, where he served as the editor of the Yale Daily News, Rene served with the U.S. Navy. He later moved to Paris to write. Although failing to write the great American novel, he did develop an appreciation for art. He returned to San Francisco where he bought land in wine country. The grapes produced by his vineyard were well-respected and he sold the planted portion of his land at a huge profit. He lived on the property with his second wife Canadian-born painter and sculptor Veronica McDonald. (His first wife had ended their marriage and returned to Paris when they moved to California.) The di Rosas expanded their art collection and formed the Rene and Veronica di Rosa Foundation in 1982. The grounds of the vineyard were opened to the public in 1997 and currently offer a year-round program of changing exhibits, lectures, educational programs and nature walks. Di Rosa served on the board of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the National Advisory Board of the Whitney Museum of American Art. He received an honorary doctorate from the San Francisco Art Institute.
