  • Notes
    • When William was seven, his loving and devoted mother experienced Christ in a radical way. She quickly transferred her church membership to the strongly evangelical Moody Church, started studying her Bible, and became determined to pass on her faith to her children.

In 1904 William graduated from a Chicago high school. As heir to the Borden Dairy estate, he was already a millionaire. For his high school graduation present, his parents gave 16-year-old Borden a trip around the world. As the young man traveled through Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, he felt a growing burden for the world's hurting people. Finally, Bill Borden wrote home to say, "I'm going to give my life to prepare for the mission field."

William graduated from Yale, in 1909, and later from Princeton Theological Seminary. He later decided to become a missionary to the Muslims of Northern China, but died of cerebral meningitis in Egypt during his Arabic language training there, at age 25. He bequeathed $1 million to the China Inland Mission and other Christian agencies. The Borden Memorial Hospital in Lanzhou, China was named after him.
