  Herbert grew up in Montana, and began his career with Northern Pacific Railroad in Livingston, enlisted in the US Navy and served four years service during the Korean War. He and his family moved from Livingston to Seattle in 1966. He retired in 1985 after 38 years of service with Burlington Northern Railroad. He finished his second career as a Trust Specialist for US Bank, retiring in 1994. His family remembers him as an avid fisherman, bowler, cook, and gardener. He especially enjoyed vacationing with his family. He was a life long member of Livingston Elks Lodge 246. He was well noted for his gourmet meals and beautiful begonia baskets.
