  After graduating from Humbolt High School, St. Paul, Minnesota, Robert attended two years of college at the University of Minnesota, majoring in physical education. He enlisted in the US Navy in October 1942 and was honorable discharged in December 1945. After his discharge, Robert went to work for Pillsbury for a short time. In 1949 he began working for Brown & Bigelow which caused him to move to Dickinson. He retired in 2009.
