  Joseph and his family moved to Morgan county, Illinois, in the fall of 1844. He was a farmer on 255 acres. He originally in politics was an Old-Line Whig, but since the day of Republicanism gave his support to the principles of that party. He was at one time connected with the Congregational Church, but became rather liberal in his views upon religious matters.
