  • Notes
    • William enlisted in the Army on October 8, 1942, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and volunteered for parachutist duty. He became a member of B Company, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Diviaion. He jumped into Normandy in the early hours of June 6, 1944, D-Day. He was immediately involved in heavy hedgerow fighting as the regiment was embroiled in combat, without relief for the next few weeks. On July 3rd, his company came under enemy fire and retreated to a safer location. Later, under the cover of darkness, Scudder organized a group of volunteers to return to the field of battle and recover the dead and wounded. During this rescue and recovery mission he was killed by sniper fire.
