Notes - In July 1911, Theodore, after graduating from Harvard, went into business for White, Weld & Company in New York. He moved to their Boston in October 1912. In November 1914, he entered the bond business with Long and Nash, Boston. He went into the security business for himself January 1917.
In September 1919 Theodore founded the firm of Scudder, Stevens and Clark, investment counsel, with F. Haven Clark (Harvard 1883) and Sidney Stevens (Harvard 1900). The firm was started in Boston and had other offices in New York, Philadelphia, and Providence. The investment firm of Scudder Stevens & Clark in Boston created the first no-load mutual fund. It was called First Investment Counsel Corp. and still exists as the Scudder Income Fund. As a result of long dissatisfaction with the management of trust funds, he was instrumental in the formation in 1931 of the Fiduciary Trust Company at One Wall Street.
From his mother, Theodore inherited artistic ability which showed itself in painting and sculpture as well as music. He also took a great interest in photography. For ten years, from 1929 to 1939, he was president of the Scudder Association, and it was he who made possible and carried through the amalgamation of the Scudder Association of America and the Scudder Memorial Association, making the two into one charitable organization known as the Scudder Association.
