Notes - Barker attended Trenton High School and Princeton University, from which he graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He then served in the U.S. Army in 1950 and 1951 during the Korean War. Upon his return, Barker began his professional career in banking at a Trenton bank.
Barker enjoyed a life-long passion for trolleys and street railways. He became a respected authority on the subject, writing and co-authoring a number of books, including Streetcars of New Jersey, a consolidation of three prior volumes. Throughout his life he traveled extensively, often outside the United States, in order to research the street railways of other cities, and he maintained a large collection of photographs and other documentation about the subject.
For many years, Barker was a loyal usher and volunteer for Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Trenton, N.J., and also was a volunteer at the Newtown Public Library.
