Notes - According to one of his grandsons, Ezekiel disliked the conventionalities and monotony of life in the settled parts of the country, and loved the excitement of frontier life. As soon as the winter had iced over the streams in 1792, he with his young wife and infant son, and five others, started from Albany county, New York, for the wilderness of the Genesee country of New York. It required six weeks to make the trip with their ox teams. Along the way they had to chop their way through dense forests, cross swollen streams, and guard their camps against the nightly visits of hungry beasts. He built his log house in what is now Victor, Ontario county. The hamlet of East Victor was originally called Scudderville after Ezekiel, who built the first permanent mill in the township.
After spending 35 years there and seeing the wilderness change to a garden, he began to pine for the freedom of a new settlement life, and removed to Cattaraugus county, New York in 1827. He took part in the Revolutionary War, and died 1853. At the time of the 1850 census, he and Cynthia were living with his son, Freeman.
