  After graduation from Ben Davis High School and Blaker's Teachers College, "Miss Mary" began teaching at Ben Davis Grade School in 1927. She completed graduate work at Butler University and was named principal of BDGS in 1943. At the request of community parents, when a new building was opened in 1959, it was dedicated as the Mary M. McClelland School and she served as its principal until her retirement in May, 1972. She was appointed to the MSD Wayne Township School Board in 1980 and server several terms until retiring from that position in 1998. From 1936 to 1957 she spent the summer months working at the Julia Jameson Nutrition Camp for Children in Bridgeport, on whose board of directors she served for many years and was named an honorary director in the late 1980's. The camp has established an award, the "Mary M. McClelland Volunteer Recognition Award" in her honor.
