Notes - After attending public school in Barnstable, William attended an academy at Middleboro, Massachusetts. He was twenty-one years of age when, in 1S63, he determined to try his fortune in the west and, leaving home, made his way to St. Louis, where he accepted and for a short time filled a position as secretary of a coal company. He then turned his attention to the grocery trade, becoming connected with J. H. Brookmire in the business. From that point forward he was a factor in mercantile circles and more and more largely played a leading part on the stage of commercial activity. He became a partner in the Garneau Scudder Company, which was eventually succeeded by the firm of Schweppe & Scudder, while later his partner in the enterprise was E. G. Scudder. Eventually a reorganization of the business brought about the establishment of the firm of the Scudder-Gale Grocer Company, wholesale grocers, of which William A. Scudder was the treasurer. To the management, control and development of that concern he devoted the best years of his life and did much to bring it to its present high standing among the commercial interests of St. Louis. He took great pride in the business and in conforming it to the highest standard of commercial ethics, and he was an active factor in its control and management until his life's labors were ended in death.
