Notes - In April 1871, Abijah filed for a pension for service during the War of 1812. In his claim he stated, "we organized as a volunteer group for the defence of the coast.....we called ourselves the 'Sea Fencibles'.....I had been captured on my way home from Lisbon Portugal." He was unable to provide proof of his service, so his claim was denied. He was engaged in West Indian and South American trade. He was mentioned in the US Marine Directory of 1851 as sailing the barque "Harvest Moon" between New York and Montevedio, Uruguay, in the wool trade.
