Evarts graduated from Williams College, 1854, a clergyman. While pastor of the Great Barrington Congregational Church, Evarts, along with two other citizens, agreed to fund the college education of W.E.B. DuBois, founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and editor of its journal, Crisis, sociologist, civil rights leader, and Father of Pan-Africanism. DuBois had graduated from high school in June 1884, and wanted to attend Harvard. Instead, he was sent to Fisk University in Nashville in September 1885. This resulted in DuBois being confronted with racial prejudice and with a colored community. He found refuge in the church. Writing to Reverend Scudder in February 1886, the young college freshman observed that he had “united with the Church and hope that the prayers of my Sunday School may help guide me in the path of Christian duty.”
