  Charles graduated from West Point 12 June 1915. During World War II, he commanded the 34th Infantry Division, the first division deployed to Europe. He led the division through the North African and Italian campaigns. Following this, he commanded the IX Corps in the Pacific. He retired from the Army in 1950.
