Notes
Sarah was born in Stamford, although there is no record of either her birth or baptism. She grew up as her father was actively involved in the politics of the Town of Stamford. At the same time there was a great deal of commercial activity within the colonies in what is now Connecticut and with New York colonies, across Long Island Sound.
Because of this, it is likely Sarah met Jonathan through either her father's travels or excursions by the Scudder family. Huntington, New York is almost directly across the sound from Stamford. Her marriage to Jonathan Scudder on 14 November 1680 is recorded in the Huntington Town Records.
Various Platt genealogies suggest that a Jonas Platt md. a Sarah Scudder. People have been trying to make various Sarah Scudders who md. other people into the wife of this Jonas Platt. One younger Sarah Scudder did md. an Epenetus Platt. But these Sarahs are all accounted for and married other husbands. The only likely one left, although this is circumstantial, is Mrs. Sarah (Brown) Scudder,WIDOW of Jonathan, NOT his daughter Sarah. He had died by 1690 allowing time for a marriage of his widow to Jonas Platt and the birth of Jonas's children in the 1690s. It is possible that Jonathan also had a 2nd wife, name unknown, mother of his youngest children. This is yet circumstantial and unproven, but definitely Jonas did not marry the mentally incapacited Sarah (Jonathan and Sarah (Brown's) daughter, when she was 23 years of age and then went on to have a great many children.
Sarah Scudder the dau. of Jonahan Scudder and Sarah Brown was b. 1681 and "non compos mentis" according to Donald Jacobus Lines in "History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield," v. 1, p. 106.
