Captain Timothy Scudder, II[1, 2, 3, 4]
-
Name Timothy Scudder Prefix Captain Suffix II Birth 1696 Cow Harbor, now Northpoint, Huntington, Suffolk, New York
[5] - Scudder Searches, v. II, no, 2, (Spring 1990), p,. 11, states the problem of Timothy's birthdate estimated at 1655 from the supposed date of 1658 for Timothy's wife Sarah Wood:
"...the six known children of Timothy and Sarah were born during the period 1696–ca 1715. The above birthdates for Timothy and Sarah therefore imply that they were ages 41 and 38, respectively, at the birth of their firstborn, which seems improbable, and that Sarah was about age 57 at the birth of her last child, biologically a virtual impossibility.
"The evidence for Sarah Wood's birthdate comes from the death records of the Crab Meadow Cemetery, Northport. These state that she died 17 January 1738, in her 80th year. While there are other possibe explanations for the conflict between thete of her birth and the birthdates of her children, the simplest is that the statement that she died in her 80th year is incorrect, either because it was incorrectly transcribed or because it has been misread.
"Assuming that the traditional birthdates for Timothy and Sarah are incorrect, how should they be changed? Based on the ranges of the chldren of Timothy (1696–ca 1715) and Benjamin (1698–1715), both were married very close to the same time, sesting that their ages were not greatly different. We therefore estimate that Timothy was born about 1668–72, a few years earlier than his brother Benjamin....Changing the dates of birth of Timothy and Sarah seems to require significant changes in the birth order of Thomas' children that have been handed down to us in past Scudder Association BULLETINS." The Revised Chronological Order proposed on p. 12 of this article in Scudder Searches, v. II, no. 2, (Spring 1990) is:
ISAAC, born 1657, christened on the records of Southold.
ELIZABETH, born 1658–62
MARY, born 1662-68
TIMOTHY, born ca 1668–72
SARAH, born 1670
BENJAMIN, born 1670–74
CLEMANCE
MERCY.
The article states: "If we accept that Timothy was born only a little before Benjamin, the will implies that the older daughters were born during the years 1657–68, probably approximated in that order.
NEW NOTE: Since Isaac's known christening record is 1657 and Sarah born 1670, it seems reasonable to consider the following:
Isaac, born 1657
Elizabeth, born 1660
Mary, born 1662–1667
Timothy, born ca 1668–72
Sarah, born 1670
Benjamin, born 1670–74
Clemance
Mercy.
Mary Ludlam, mother of these children was christened in 1639 so it is unlikely that she would have had any children before 1657 when she was age 18. Mary would have turned 40 in 1679. Where there are potentially spaces greater than 2 or 3 years between offspring, there could have been a miscarriage or an unknown birth of another child who died without any record which is speculative but not impossible.
