  Bessie was reared in Switzerland county and attended school there. She was a 1968 graduate of Pennsylvania State University. She began her career in food service at King's Daughters' Hospital. She was the food supervisor at the Indiana Soldiers Home in Lafayette for 13 years. She was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Madison and was Volunteer of the Year in 1994. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Jefferson Post 9 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1969. She was also a member of the Odon Church of the Nazarene and was active in the Women of the Moose Chapter 931. She enjoyed quilting, writing cards and letters, and playing the piano.
