  Ambrose attended Albion College, returning after 18 months to Ingham county, where he became a school teacher. After four years teaching, he became a farmer. He eventually farmed 160 acres in Arcadia township, Gratiot county. He was a Republican and served as Drain Commissioner and Highway Commissioner.
