  Joseph was manager of a steam ship company in 1930. He had graduated from Yale University and had been a lieutenant in the Navy. His father and uncles, Joseph, Hancock, and William, had purchased Catalina Island in 1892 from the James estate of San Francisco, and had sold it to William Wrigley in 1919.
