Notes - Matthias arrived in California 27 October 1849 by ship around the Horn. He became one of the owners of the Plumas Eureka gold mine with a partner, George Kilorn. He conducted a prosperous mercantile business in Virginia City, coming to Reno, Nevada, in 1868, when he became a partner with S.C. Fergus. The partners built the first flour mill on the Trukee River. In 1880, Matthias was the superintendent of a mining company in Nevada. His son, Eugene, was working with him.
