Notes - Discussion: Samuel apparently married at least three times; but, left no record of surviving children and no record if he ever had any issue. In his will, dated 23 Aug 1771, probated 11 Nov 1771, he named his then wife as Helena. Samuel left most of his estate to his sister Sarah, on the death of whom, it was to go to Sarah and Samuel Denman, children of his sister Deborah Denman, of New Jersey. Much speculation surrounds Deborah, based on a very late New York marriage record for one named Deborah Scudder in 1761 to a Daniel Denman. If this record belongs to this Deborah, sister of Samuel III, she apparently would have been somewhere between 40 or 50 years old at the time of this marriage or a much younger sister of Samuel III. Samuel III's sister Deborah had 2 children to whom he left a legacy in 1771. The abstract of his will does not mention they were of New Jersey, but that notion appears in Scudder Searches without citation for it. There were numerous Denmans but very sketchy information for any named Daniel (or David), especially that fit the data for Deborah.

"Page 143.–In the name of God, Amen. I, SAMUEL SCUDDER, of Newtown, in Queens Count y, on Nassau Island, being weak in body. I direct all debts due in Law or Conscience to be paid, and my executors may sell personal estate for the same. I leave to my wife Helena one cow, one bed with furniture, and cupboard, six chairs, and £50. Also the use of £150 during the time she remains my widow, and at her death or marriage it is to go to my sister, Sarah Scudder. I leave to my sister, Sarah Scudder, the profits and rents of my estate during her life. I leave to my wife the use of one room in my house, and firewood, pasture, and the privilege to cut fodder for one cow. After the death of my sister Sarah I leave the rest of my estate to Sarah and Samuel Denman, children of my sister, Deborah Denman. If they die under age, without issue, then to my sister, Sarah Scudder. I make my beloved friends, Richard Betts, Jr., and Nathaniel Woodward, executors.
