Notes - James was educated in England. He returned to the Nilgiri's in 1878 and started planting on the Hallacary Estate near Coonor. Soon afterwards, he was instrumental in opening Adderly and Glenburne Estates, now part of the Blue Mountain Estates Ltd. He was closely connected with the Nilgiri Plantation Co. Ltd., comprising of Glendale, Glenmore, Runnymede, Colacumbie and the Rookery Group of Estates, and was a director and visiting Agent of this company for many years.
During his career James owned 35 Estates on the Nilgiri's and Shevaroys, amoung these being the Tiashola Estate, now the property of Tea Estates India Ltd. On the Palni Hills he owned a group of 5 coffee Estates in partnership with the late Mr. Fred Bell. At one time he also owned the Waterfall Estate on the Anamallias and opened the first 50 acres of tea there. He was a director of Messrs. T. Stanes & Co. Ltd. from 1936-1938. He was an active planter up to six years before his death, when the Sutton, loisiana and Doondonari Estates were sold to the Neelamalia Tea and Coffee Estates Co. Ltd. He took a very keen interest in planting matters up to a few days before his death.
