    • John served as 1st Lieutenant, Ohio Militia, being commissioned June 7, 1841. Later he was commissioned a captain of a company to fight against Mexico, but the war ended. He was a raftsman, building large rafts of logs and floating them down the Ohio and Mississippi to New Orleans.
