In September, 1863, he returned to Canton and entered into a warehouse partnership with John D. Tyler. On January 1 , 1866, he arrived in Linton and began a new merchandizing business of his own. Soon after arriving in Linton, Edward was appointed as the Postmaster until about 1875, when his son assumed the position.
Edward and his brother John were both huge men, very dark complexioned, very handsome. Both men were well over 6'9" and weighed around 300 pounds. From a letter written by Edward, dated June 15, 1891; 'My Grandfather was a German being a Hessian and of men hired by England to fight against the Colonies in the Revolutionary War (about 1773). After the close of the war he remained in this country and married a North Carolina woman by whom he had 3 children, Sandford (my Father), Joshua and their sister named Martha . After his death his widow married a man named Sanford who had other children half brother, one of whom visited my father once named John Sanford who at that (1836 or 7) time lived in Alabama. My father married Mariam Copeland from Northampton Co. NC, w ho belonged to a large family. Many of my mother's relatives formerly lived in Northampton County but have had no correspondence since the War.'
