Notes - Timothy's birth date in early Scudder Association publications was estimated too early and, after careful analysis based on the births of his children and his own mother, was later corrected and changed to"ca. 1668–1672” in a subsequent issue of Scudder Searches, v. II, no. 2,(Spring 1990): 11–12. This updated article explains the evidentiary reasons for these changes. A brief summary is:
"Scudder Family in America: The Beginnings," Scudder Searches, Scudder Association, v. I, no. 2, (Summer 1989), p 13, estimates Timothy's birth as 1655, "probably at Southold." This estimated birthdate is later corrected and changed to "ca. 1668–1672) in a subsequent issue of Scudder Searches, v. II, no. 2, (Spring 1990): 11–12. This updated article explains the evidentiary reasons for these changes. A brief summary is:
"Traditionally, Timothy has been considered the oldest child of his parents, born about 1655 at Southold, New York (Long Island): died about 1740. This tradition goes back at least to Cooley in the mid-19th century [Eli F. Cooley, Genealogyf Early Settlers in Trenton and Ewing, NJ, (Trenton: 1883)]. The tradition is partly based on evidence that Timothy's wife, Sarah Wood, was born in 1658. Assuming, as was usually the case, that Timothy was several years older than his wife, a birthdate of 1655 for Timothy does not seem unreasonable.*
"There is a problem with these birthdates, however, as follows: the six known children of Timothy and Sarah were born during the period 1696–ca 1715. The above birthdates for Timothy and Sarah therefore imply that they were ages 41 and 38, rectively, at the birth of their firstborn, which seems improbable, and that Sarah was about age 57 at the birth of her last child, biologically a virtual impossibility.
"The evidence for Sarah Wood's birthdate comes from the death records of the Crab Meadow Cemetery, Northpoint. These state that she died 17 January 1738, in her 80th year. While there are other possible explanations for the conflict betweene date of her birth and the birthdates of her children, the simplest is that the statement that she died in her 80th year is incorrect, either because it was incorrectly transcribed or because it has been misread.
"Assuming that the traditional birthdates for Timothy and Sarah are incorrect, how should they be changed? Based on the ranges of the children of Timothy (1696–ca 1715) and Benjamin (1698–1715), both were married very close to the same time, gesting that their ages were not greatly different. We therefore estimate that Timothy was born about 1668–72, a few years earlier than his brother Benjamin...
"Changing the dates of birth of Timothy and Sarah seems to require significant changes in the birth order of Thomas' children that have been handed down to us in past Scudder Association BULLETINS." See notes of parents of Timothy for the newoposed birth order and further reasons.
*NEW NOTE: Timothy's mother Mary Ludlam has a christening record in 1639 at Matlock, Derbyshire, so her age is known. She was 18 at the birth of their first child Isaac whose 1657 birth was recorded on Southold, Long Island town records. It is unlikely that Mary had any children born before that date.
Timothy was a prosperous Long Island planter. He had inherited valuable property at Babylon, at Cow Harbor (now North Point), at Red Hook (now Vernon Valley), and at Crab Meadow.

The compiler believes that the correct date should be about 1668/72. He reasons that because of the birthdates of Timothy's children, he and his wife would have been too old. - [S97] Early Long Island Wills of Suffolk County, 1691-1703, pp. 46-49.
