    • Jared graduated from Albany Academy and Middlebury College, Vermont, before serving in the Army Air Corps during WW II. He enrolled at the University of Michigan upon discharge from the service. He received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Michigan in Economics, and taught at the University of Detroit and Carroll College, Wisconsin, before joining the faculty of Western Michigan University in 1956. He taught at WMU for 34 years, retiring in 1990.

      Jared was active in the local chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the Kalamazoo Area Transportation Study (KATS). He was a long-time member of the First and North Presbyterian Churches and was active in the lives of those congregations. Additionally, he was a strong advocate for social justice and was active in civil rights, peace, environmental, and other community efforts. Jared loved the out-of-doors and enjoyed skiing, hiking, canoeing and walking.
