Notes - Gretchen was rescued from the sinking Titanic on 14 April 1912. A resident of Hudson, New York, she travelled with her aunts, Kornelia Theodosia Andrews and Mrs John C. Hogeboom. The three ladies boarded the Titanic in Southampton under first class ticket number 13502 (Ð77). Gretchen occupied cabin D-9. She opened a farewell letter when she arrived in her cabin. It was a good wish for every day of the voyage.
Good weather

Every desire
Tommies to burn
Chocolate icecream
Heavenly evenings
Entire meals
No regrets
The curious note spells out "Gretchen". There was room for Gretchen in the third life boat, but she refused to leave without her two aunts. They were taken off on the fourth and last lifeboat able to put out from the stricken ship. Gretchen had enjoyed a four-course lunch on 14 April, and put the menu in her handbag. The menu was auctioned by Sotheby's on 2 December 2003 as the last luncheon menu ever printed on the Titanic. It was withdrawn from the sale but its value was placed at $20,000.
Gretchen died aboard the SS Constitution in the Mediterranean.
