  Florence's father was a well-known lumber and shipping magnate, who owned and operated the McCormick Steamship Lines of Portland, Oregon. She attended Santa Barbara Girls School and Miss Penrose's School in Florence, Italy and graduated from Castilleya School, Palo Alto, California, in 1929. She debuted at a ball at the San Francisco Golf Club. During World War II, she was a volunteer for the Red Cross at Ford Ord, California.
