  After graduating from Smith College in 1925, D.V. took courses in International Law in Switzerland. It was on her ocean voyage home that she met Dana Scudder when they dove into each other in the ship's swimming pool. They both required stitches in the scalp, but a ship board friendship developed netertheless. Dana suggested that Dorothy look up his brother, John, who was in harvard Medical College. When she returned home to Boston, she invited John to dinner. They were married in 1929, sailed to India, and D.V. became imersed in the life of her medical missionary husband and his family.
