• Notes

  In 1900, Blanche was a patient in the Southern Indiana Hospital for the Insane in Evansville, Indiana. Known as "Woodmere" and located in Knight township about three miles from Evansville, the hospital provided solitude and peace for mentally-ill patients. While Central State Hospital was a progressive force in scientific medicine in the early 20th century, Evansville remained largely a custodial institution capable of housing about 1,000 patients.
