• Notes

  Isabelle and Wheeler Bond lived at 17 Vandeventer Place, St. Louis, in 1920. This street, laid out in 1870, had become the city's grand address by the late 1880s. It was a three-quarter-mile private street, extending from Grand to Vandeventer Avenue a few blocks north of Olive, set down in the middle of what was already a prime residential area known as the Stoddard addition. The area deed's mandated single-family residences, with control of the entire tract in the hands of trustees who hired watchmen, enforced maintenance standards, and levied assessments.
