• Notes

  In the chapter about the Salem schools, it appears that on 25 March 1716, "John Swinnerton began to keep the English school by the town house, at the usual compensation." This was a son, evidently, of Dr. Swinnerton of Salem, and, so far as records go, the last of his tribe. The schoolteacher's salary, in those days, seems to have been about twenty-five dollars a year.
