Notes - John received his early education in Cold Spring Harbor. In 1866, he went to Colonel Marlborough Churchill's Military Academy at Ossining, New York. In 1869, he became a clerk in the office of his uncle, Townsend Jones, in New York City. This was the firm of Jones, Underhill & Scudder. This company became Underhill & Scudder, and eventually Ladd, Burling & Company until it's dissolution in 1902.
After retirement in 1904 he settled upon his father's place in Cold Spring Harbor, where he devoted himself to the early history of Long Island and the "Jones's Genealogy," which latter work was practically finished at the time of his death. He was a member of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society.
