• Notes

  Louis was an Army doctor; completing his service as a colonel. He was stationed as surgeon at Fort Buford, in present North Dakota. Fort Buford was built in 1866 near the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers, and became a major supply depot for military field operations. It is where Sitting Bull and 35 of his families surrendered in 1881.
