  • Notes
    • According to Violet Toph, family genealogist: "There was something mysterious about his death, for his second wife did not even notify his daughter and step-daughter of it until sometime after he died. About that time there was a notice in the Lawrenceburg paper that a mail carrier named Toph was drowned in a small creek near there and we always wondered if it were Uncle James. His wife Ernestine Nightengale Toph came to visit relatives of her niece in Versailles after that, but carefully avoided his relatives. After they moved to Cincinnati, I never heard from Uncle James anymore. He knew my address in Terre Haute and promised to send me his address when located but never did."
